USF Health Helps Fuel Healthy Futures

March is National Nutrition Month, a time to highlight the importance of making informed food choices and developing healthy eating habits. We recognize that nutrition plays a crucial role in improving maternal and child health outcomes.  Proper nutrition is essential for a healthy pregnancy, ensuring both mother and baby receive the nutrients needed for growth, development, and overall well-being. That’s why we are proud to celebrate our collaboration with Dr. Lauri Wright, PhD, and the talented students from USF Health, who have contributed their expertise to enhance our TeleStart program.

TeleStart is our innovative chat and telehealth pregnancy support program, designed to connect expectant and new mothers with vital resources to ensure a healthy pregnancy and postpartum experience. As part of this program, several dedicated USF students worked alongside Dr. Wright to develop culturally relevant diet and nutrition messages tailored to the needs of the families we serve. These messages help empower parents with practical guidance on healthy eating, proper prenatal nutrition, and strategies for making nutritious choices. Additionally, the students created messages focused on infant nutrition and feeding, providing parents with important information on breastfeeding, formula feeding, and introducing solid foods in a healthy and developmentally appropriate way. By prioritizing both maternal and infant nutrition, we help promote healthier pregnancies, reduce complications, and support the long-term health of both mother and baby.

Collaborative contributions to TeleStart are made possible through funding from the Florida Department of Health reflects our shared commitment to improving maternal and child health outcomes in our community. With the support of USF Health students, we are equipping families with the knowledge they need to nurture themselves and their babies through informed nutrition choices.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Wright and her students for their invaluable contributions. Their dedication to promoting health and wellness ensures that the families in our community receive expert-backed guidance to support healthy habits.
